Location

  • Fairfax, in Northern Virginia; less than 20 miles from Washington, DC;
  • Washington, DC, metro region.

Are you planning to travel to Brazil on vacation and want to learn the language to communicate there? Or do you need to learn Portuguese for professional reasons? No matter what your motive is, I am here to help you learn Brazilian Portuguese.

Private or Semi-private classes

  • Private: Private tutorial instruction is tailored to meet the language goal of each student.
  • Semi-private: Bring your own group of 2 or 3 people and each student pay a discount rate.

Courses

  • Basic, Intermediate and Advanced for adults.
  • Brazilian Portuguese for kids.

Methodology

Lessons are given in a fun and dynamic environment. Students exercise their fluency, learn grammar and vocabulary as well as how to interact in Portuguese using the following tools:

  • Conversation: tailored to student's interests
  • Reading: Brazilian literature, news, articles, texts
  • Writing: exercises, compositions, homework
  • Multimedia: Internet, video, podcasts, audio (Brazilian songs, Brazilian shows on radio, news, dialogues in mp3)
  • Games

Students learn a lot too about Brazilian culture: music, food, literature and much more! After every class, students take printed materials and mp3 files of the lessons given to study and practice at home. Tests are applied at regular intervals to evaluate students' performance.

Class hours are 60 minutes in length. I suggest a minimum of two hours per week. My schedules are flexible, with availability in the morning, afternoon and evenings.

About me

I am Brazilian, with a Ph.D. in Biology, a degree in Education, more than 15 years of experience in teaching and development of educational materials.

I am fluent in English and Spanish. So, if you are a Spanish speaker and do not have a good fluency in English, you are welcome to have your classes with me in Spanish.

Testimonials

I highly recommended classes with Cynthia Santos. I have studied Portuguese over the years with many tutors and teachers and I can say that she is one of the best I have ever found. She will tailor her lessons to the level of the student, and she will find materials that are based on your interests. One of the best things about her classes is that she always varies the material—you will spend some time talking, listening, reading, and writing. She brings in music and videos and always keeps things lively and interesting. In addition to all of this, she is a lovely person, very caring, very Brazilian. Sign up for her classes now—you won’t regret it.

"Taking Brazilian Portuguese with Cynthia is so much fun and a very nice experience because it actually feels as if I were in Brazil learning about its people, language, culture, food, music, etc. It introduced me to a new different world. Brazilian Portuguese is very unique for its variety of words because it lets me express or describe feelings and things that I can definitely not do with other languages. It has been 8 months so far and now I can actually say that I do speak Portuguese and have a very broad knowledge about Brazil as a whole. If I were you, I wouldn't think it twice to start taking the course right now." (F. Dorival, Alexandria, VA).
